Resistance Training
2017
Archival pigment print on cotton paper
120 x 120 cm
Edition of 5 + 2 AP
Resistance Training fuses an Asian male body with a multi-armed deity to explore the construction of desire and masculinities through the physicality of sport. The gym is a space filled with visual codes of strength, power, and dominance. Resistance training, or weight lifting, shapes the body to a paradigm of ideal masculinity. In the age of the #gymbro, where men’s bodies are rendered more visible than ever, this work plays on ‘resistance’ as the use of force to oppose something. Cultural resistance is the refusal to accept or comply, and opposes an established authority. Training oneself to resist is also a strengthening of the mind, body and spirit. It is a resistance that destabilises the performance of masculinity.
